(ARTISTS, SCHOLARS & CURATORS) Research Fellowships at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, England—The Henry Moore Institute is a world-recognized centre for the study of sculpture in the heart of Leeds and invites applications for the following fellowship programmes in 2012–2013:

Research Fellowships are intended for artists, scholars and curators, working on historic and contemporary sculpture using the Institute’s library, archive of sculptors’ papers and the collection of Leeds Art Gallery. Up to four fellows will be given the opportunity to spend a month in Leeds to develop their own research. With access to our resources and an on-going dialogue with the Institute staff, fellows are free to pursue their own interests in a supportive and stimulating environment.

Senior Fellowships are intended to give established scholars (working on any aspect of sculpture) time and space to develop a research project free from their usual work commitments. Up to two senior fellowships, for periods of between four to six weeks will be offered.

Both fellowships provide accommodation, travel expenses and a per diem. The Institute offers the possibility of presenting finished research in published form, as a seminar, or as a small exhibition.

(ALL) Call for Applications for Residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Bellagio, Italy—Deadline: December 1, 2011

The Residency Program allows for focused work, uninterrupted by the professional and personal demands of daily life, in a diverse and stimulating community of fellow residents. Residents include an international group of academics, writers, artists, scientists, journalists, non-governmental organization practitioners, and policymakers. In addition to time for dedicated work on individual projects and for reflection during the day, building new connections and collegial interaction with other residents is a defining characteristic of the Bellagio experience. Meals and informal presentations of residents' work afford an opportunity for dynamic discussion and engagement with each other. The combination of quiet time for individual, focused work and connections with such a diverse community is unparalleled.

Academic Writing as well as Arts & Literary Arts residencies typically last four weeks, and spouses/life partners may accompany residents. Practitioner residencies can last between two to four weeks. Joint applications from co-authors are also welcome.

An open call is set to select seven artists from all over the world (deadline: October 20). They will have the opportunity to experiment and study for four weeks (from December 2 to December 30, 2011) with a great performance artist, visiting professor Serge Pey. In order to increase the visibility of the selected artists’ works, two internationally acclaimed artists will also take part of "Le Ville Matte" as short-term guests: Li-Ping Ting and Michel Raji. They will be involved in a theoretical - practical and demonstrative work.

The Program 2011 is entitled “KRISIS: Crisis of art and Art of crisis”. Artists will also be involved in theoretical and practical activities on the history of Performance art through conferences, round tables and film screenings.

By focusing on the evolution of artistic languages and on the artists' need to experiment, the project promotes periods of study and research. Le Ville Matte offers an experience of life and work in small towns, thus giving the opportunity to live in close contact with the community.

The residency will end with a final show and a publication, documenting the works produced during the training and research period. In order to understand and live the territory, three days of excursion are also planned.

New Residencies & Grants and a My Words Project Update

Hey everyone, thanks so much for all your letters of support and all your donations to the My Words Are My Shelter project. It apparently struck a deep chord in many people and the response has been amazing. The update is this: In the very first day, I got $507! That is enough to send a box of journals, pens and pencils to every single woman at my mom’s shelter. I haven’t even checked my P.O. box for checks yet and today, some other donations came in. What I decided to do with the extra money, is to use the money for a ticket to go to Cleveland to the shelter (no need for housing as I have friends there) and do a poetry workshop with the women there this coming February. Any left-over money from this My Words project after that will be donated to the shelter in either check form or in the form of more journals or books (they really need books too!). So that’s the update. I’ll run this project until December 20th for now. I think that it will become an on-going project for the future and I hope that it inspires other such actions across the globe. Actually, it already has---I have heard from several people around the world who said they were going to do the same thing. Very cool! And all because of YOU!

The Travel and Study Grant Program places emphasis on individual exploration and growth. (MUSICIANS & COMPOSERS) Music Omni Residency: Each August, approximately a dozen musicians--composers and performers from around the globe--gather for two and a half weeks to share in a unique collaborative music making residency program. Music Omi encourages its residents to participate as members of an international musical community; sharing ideas, performing each others works and writing music for one another while exploring their own musical vision. Music Omi invites applicants from all musical disciplines who wish to broaden their artistic horizons and engage actively with a diversity of other musicians.

Unlike most artists residency programs, where artists come to work in isolation, Music Omi actively encourages the exchange of ideas and the sharing of cultures through active collaboration. A singular feature of the Music Omi experience is the presentation of two public concerts at the conclusion of the program (one on the Art Omi campus itself near the conclusion of the residency, and the other at a New York City venue the day following the conclusion of the residency).

Applicants may be primarily composers, improvisers or performers, but have some proficiency in each of these areas. Music Omi welcomes academically trained musicians, musicians "of the street," players of traditional instruments, concert instruments, vocalists, and sound artists of all kinds. "Pop," "jazz," "classical," "folk," "experimental," and other such labels have no bearing on the selection process, only musical excellence and a wish to collaborate. It is recommended that applicants come not with specific projects in mind, but rather with a willingness to share their skills and sensibilities, and an openness to working together with others on jointly conceived musical projects.

All awarded fellows commit to remaining for the entire residency and to participating in the concluding concerts. Everyone accepted to Music Omi receives full room and board during his or her stay (note that Art Omi is unable to provide travel funds).

(ARTISTS) Emergency Assistance Program—The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation: The Emergency Assistance Program provides interim financial assistance to qualified artists whose needs are the result of an unforeseen, catastrophic incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation. Each grant is given as one-time assistance for a specific emergency, examples of which are fire, flood, or emergency medical need. The program does not consider requests for dental work, chronic situations, capital improvements, or projects of any kind; nor can it consider situations resulting from general indebtedness or lack of employment. The maximum amount of this grant is $10,000; an award of $4,000 is typical. To be eligible, an artist must be able to demonstrate a minimum involvement of ten years in a mature phase of his or her work. (ARTISTS) Individual Support Grants—Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation:
The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation wishes to encourage artists who have dedicated their lives to developing their art, regardless of their level of commercial success. This program was conceived in order to recognize and support the serious, fully committed artist, and we hope these individuals will consider applying. Twelve grants are awarded each year. Applications are reviewed by a panel of five professionals in the arts who have no affiliation with the foundation. (ALL & SCHOLARS) New England Regional Fellowship Consortium Grant: Massachusetts Historical Society: The New England Regional Fellowship Consortium, a collaboration of 18 major cultural agencies, will offer at least 11 awards in 2011–2012. Each grant will provide a stipend of $5,000 for a minimum of eight weeks of research at participating institutions. Each itinerary must include at least three different member institutions, and include at least two weeks at each of these. (ART HISTORIANS & SCHOLARS) Hamad bin Khalifa Travel Fellowships—Virginia Commonwealth University: The Hamad bin Khalifa Travel Fellowships are awarded to up to 20 individuals who wish to attend the 4th biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, "God is Beautiful; He Loves Beauty: The Object in Islamic Art and Culture," October 29-31, 2011 at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. Fellowships cover the cost of roundtrip travel to Doha, lodging and meals during the symposium, and special events and excursions. The fellowships are intended to enable junior and senior scholars at all levels to attend the symposium; preference will be given to applicants from diverse backgrounds with long-standing research interests in Islamic art and architecture. STUDENTS & SCHOLARS) Residential Research Grant—University of Wisconsin--Madison: The Friends of the University of Wisconsin—Madison Libraries (FOL) is pleased to offer several one month residential grants-in-aid, for research in the humanities in the university’s Memorial Library. The Library’s collections include (among other fields): History of science from the Middle Ages through the Enlightenment. Pseudo science and medical and scientific quackery. The largest American collection of avant-garde “Little Magazines.” Scandinavian and Germanic history and literature. Dutch post-Reformation theology and church history. French political pamphlets of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Applicants should have Ph.D. Foreign scholars or graduate students who are ABD are also eligible. (MUSICIANS & ARTISTS) The Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship for study in Paris: The Harriet Hale Woolley Scholarship is a private grant awarded annually to up to four graduate and post-graduate American students in the visual fine arts (painting, graphic design, print-making, sculpture, photography) and music (composition, instrumental or vocal performance). The scholarship is not intended for research in art history, or musicology, nor for dance or theatre.
Successful candidates propose a unique and detailed project related to their study which requires a one-year residency in Paris. As this project should include enrollment in a recognized French art school or music conservatory, it is strongly suggested that the candidate establish a significant contact with a teacher or institution prior to arriving in France and to show evidence of this contact in his/her application dossier.
